BZ Playing Guitar

Brandy Zdan

Bio

I come from the little frozen prairie town of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. I have been singing for as long as i can remember. It’s in my blood. It’s my way of life.

I discovered rock n’ roll through my parents musty record collection at the age of 11, studied classical vocal performance in my early teens, and played my first show of my own songs at the age of 15. I soon found out that my heart lie in singing my own songs and this year marks 13 years of being on stage singing those songs.

I then discovered my love for tone. That is, guitar tone. Four years ago on a fateful day in Nashville, at my friends studio, I played a lap steel for the first time. I fell in love immediately. It was a direct extension of my singing voice. I bought a 57 silvertone the next day.

My other loves are my 1962 Harmony Rocket and my Honer Accordion.

Lap Steel, Guitar, Accordion…these are my tools.

In 2002 I met Dave Quanbury and formed Twilight Hotel. We formed a musical bond that holds true to this day. We are a JUNO nominated (Canada’s Grammy) internationally touring act. Basically, we have a lot of fun and sometimes call ourselves ’ The Harmony Rocket Revue’. Our 3rd album, When the Wolves Go Blind, was recorded in Los Angeles, CA with the killer rhythm section of Stephen Hodges & Jeff Turmes who currently back up Mavis Staples. It came out in January 2011.

What does my music sound like? I hate that question. Everyone does. I try not to think to much about it. Let’s just say I draw on the influences of old blues/gospel artists like Big Mama Thornton and Sister Rosetta Tharpe while being completely obsessed with Daniel Lanois, Tom Waits and John Lennon.
